The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based tactical strategy game with a high fantasy theme, featuring both single-player, and online/hotseat multiplayer combat.

I found Battle for Wesnoth back in 2007. It's actually the thing that got me into software development. At first I could only mess around with the game's built-in map editor. As the things I wanted to do got more complex, I had to learn more and more about the game's custom scripting language.

At some point, I hit limitations in what the game engine could do. That's when I began submitting minor patches to the core game and became a member of the development team. I was also responsible for moderating the game's official forums, managing its official Twitter account, and maintaining its presence on Desura for a while.

I'm not involved much with Wesnoth anymore, but I owe it a lot. Over the past several years (nearly a decade!) I've learned a lot of things and met a lot of awesome people thanks to it.
